Boosting Alexa Rankings
I’ve recently been tagged in an Alexa Link Train by Vince Cordic. The rules are simple:
- Someone starts a link train, they post the rules and links to the initial participants on their blog.
- Everyone who was linked to then copies the original list and adds links of their own to the train, so it grows.
- The newly added participants copy the link train list and add their own links and so on..
This link train’s purpose is to boost the Alexa rankings of its members. While being heavily biased towards the tech industry and easily gamed, Alexa rankings are still used in many places to determine a site’s value. The value of your site is based on a geometric mean of how many people visit your site, and the average number of pages that are viewed - there are other ways to quickly rise your ranking, and I’ll be including that in the next post.

Absolutely, at least for three months. Your site ranking is based on the geometric mean of the average number of unique visitors and page views. After three months, the influence of any page view is gone.
The Alexa redirect allows people without the toolbar to be counted, so if you already have a toolbar installed clicking on the redirect won’t do any more than just visiting the page.
You could easily change the navigation on a website to all alexa redirects, and massively boost your rankings, although this may affect your google rankings.

It would be pretty easy to write a simple cloaking script that does just that and still maintains your search engine rankings.
Many people hear the word “cloaking” and think “evil”, but in my opinion cloaking has many legit uses (such as geo-ip targeting), and only becomes evil if that’s what you use it for.
However, I don’t think it would be worth the hassle, unless you really need a low Alexa rank for some reason.
